The week kicks off with the third annual Slow Roll event on Sunday June 9th. Our Slow Roll is a large, free, and inclusive community 10km bike ride dedicated to contributing to the growth of safe bicycle culture in the Sarnia-Lambton area. The event is open to all regardless of age, experience, ability, or type of bike. With a slow pace, police escort and marshals, the ride is kept safe and social. It is more than just a bike ride – it is a conduit for bringing people from all walks of life together and connecting our community. The route also highlights some of the key bike lanes and paths in our community that allow cyclists to travel safely from one place to another. We anticipate 1000+ participants on event day.
The BIG Slow Roll is free to all but in lieu of a registration fees, participants are encouraged to donate to Big Brothers Big Sisters in Sarnia.
The Slow Roll event is followed by a week of various initiatives. Next, riders can participate in a social media contest promoting community members to bike to school and work utilizing safe practices. Community members share a photo of themselves in their helmet, before or after, cycling to school or work to be entered into a draw to win prizes. Every tagged photo gets participants one entry into the draw.
This week also offers one of Ben’s Bike Tours that explore Sarnia’s existing trails in addition to the newly developed midtown trail. This ride is facilitated by our BIG Bike Week Sponsor: nuSarnia. Ben is one of the co-founder’s of nuSarnia.
Lastly, BIG Bike Week culminates on the weekend of June 15th with a Kids Bike Rally (KBR). This event meets at the Midtown Trail head at Lambton College, where participants will be encouraged to decorate their bikes with supplied materials. There will also be fun obstacle courses to enjoy throughout the afternoon. Riders will set off on a trail ride that will have vendors along the route. Parents/guardians are welcome to join in on this family friendly ride. To receive a stamp on their KBR event passport, participants will have to answer a bike safety question at each booth along the route. A completed passport will qualify a participant to be entered into a draw for prizes. This FREE event is facilitated by our BIG Bike Week Sponsor: nuSarnia Foundation.
